Work-Life Balance in Action: The Flexibility of Freelancing
The Gift of Flexibility: Celebrating My Birthday as a Freelancer
Recently, I celebrated my birthday, and for the first time, I could fully enjoy it with my loved ones. Thanks to the flexibility of freelancing, I took the day off with my clients’ support. They were kind enough to approve my request, wished me well in advance, and allowed me to take the time I needed to prepare for the family celebration.
For context, I took the day off to make everything perfect for my family’s arrival, including my mom, sister-in-law, and my favorite person in the world—my one-year-old nephew. I had a list of “birthday prep” chores to get through: cleaning, laundry, and grocery shopping, with special care for my nephew’s space.
Having this time was a reminder of why I chose freelancing in the first place—the freedom to prioritize my family and personal well-being without compromising my work. When I worked in a corporate setting, birthdays often meant business as usual. Leave requests around my birthday often went unapproved, due to low staff availability or prior requests from other team members. Celebrating was usually put on the back burner as deadlines took center stage.
Now, as a freelancer, I appreciate the balance I’ve built—a work structure that gives me the freedom to take time off for moments that matter, while ensuring my clients’ needs are still met. This freedom didn’t come without effort, and it’s something I deeply value. In freelancing, maintaining trust and communication with clients is essential, so I make it a point to plan ahead for any breaks.
Why Flexibility Matters—Not Just for Me but for My Clients
This balance isn't just for personal benefit. Taking intentional time off helps me recharge, bringing a fresh, focused mindset back to my projects. It’s a win-win: clients get a dedicated partner who’s both present and productive, and I have the flexibility to enjoy a life outside of work.
Celebrating birthdays doesn’t always have to be grand. Sometimes, it’s just having a day to yourself, doing things you love, whether that’s traveling, dining out, or simply sharing a meal at home with loved ones.
Choosing a freelancer who values work-life balance can be a hidden advantage. With that balance, I come back to work energized and able to give my best, which directly benefits my clients. The trust, flexibility, and respect I receive in my work make it a truly rewarding experience—for both sides.
